  • What's a robo advisor?

    A robo advisor is an affordable digital financial service that uses technology to help automate investing based on information investors provide about themselves and their financial situation. "Robo" refers to these services being almost completely digital, and that computers, smartphones, or tablets are used to access and interact with your accounts. "Advisor" speaks to the investment advisors that offer digital advice and account management services, often for a lower fee than traditional investment advisory services.

  • What's a hybrid robo advisor?

    A hybrid robo advisor is a service that typically combines a professionally managed account (through the help of a robo advisory service) with access to financial guidance or planning. For many hybrid robo advisors, the guidance and planning services are available through phone or video calls with human financial advisors. By meeting over the phone and through computer or app-based video conferencing, these services can come at a lower cost than meeting in person with a traditional financial advisor.

  • How do robo advisors work?

    Robo advisors use various pieces of information about an investor to suggest an investment strategy. In most cases, you'll first be asked some questions online or through an app about yourself and your current financial situation. A robo advisor then uses that information to suggest an investment strategy for your financial goals. Investment strategies can include a mix of different types of investments and many robo advisors include account rebalancing services to help your investments stay in line with your financial goals and preferences.

  • How does Fidelity® Personalized Planning & Advice work?

    With Fidelity® Personalized Planning & Advice, you start by telling us a few things about yourself: the year you were born, your household income, the reason you're investing, the amount you hope to invest, when you'll need the money you're investing, and your risk tolerance, and we'll suggest an investment strategy consisting of Fidelity funds that hold stocks, bonds, and short-term investments. You can also give us more information about yourself which allows us to know you better and to help us suggest an investment strategy that may be even more closely aligned to your financial situation. When you don't provide us with the additional information, we propose an investment strategy using the information you provided us along with assumed responses about you based on information we derive about similarly aged investors or investors with a similar time horizon from other Fidelity programs and services.

    You can select the proposed investment strategy or another strategy that you believe is appropriate for you (subject to certain constraints). After that, you open your account online.

    Once your account is open, you can add money to it. We'll start by offering you the chance to make an initial deposit, in the same amount you told us you were going to start with when you created your profile. If you told us you were going to make recurring monthly deposits, we'll prompt you to add those next. But don't worry if you want to put those off until later—you can set those up at any time.

  • Who will manage the day-to-day investing in my Fidelity® Personalized Planning & Advice account?

    The day-to-day investing and trading decisions in Fidelity® Personalized Planning & Advice accounts are managed by Strategic Advisers LLC, a registered investment adviser and a Fidelity Investments company.

  • Can I choose the investments for my Fidelity® Personalized Planning & Advice account?

    You can't choose individual investments for your Fidelity® Personalized Planning & Advice account. By enrolling in a managed account service, like Personalized Planning & Advice, you turn the day-to-day management of your account over to Fidelity. However, you are entitled to request reasonable restrictions on the management of your account.   • What types of investments can I expect to find in my Fidelity® Personalized Planning & Advice account?

    Your Fidelity® Personalized Planning & Advice account will hold a combination of Fidelity Flex® mutual funds. These funds generally hold domestic stocks, foreign stocks, bonds, or short-term investments. Depending on your investment strategy and your account, we'll choose which funds we think will help you meet your goals.

  • What are Fidelity Flex® funds?

    Fidelity Flex® funds are a lineup of Fidelity mutual funds that have zero expense ratios, and include proprietary active and passive funds. Flex funds are currently available only to certain fee-based accounts offered by Fidelity, like Fidelity® Go. Unlike many other mutual funds, the Flex funds do not charge management fees or, with limited exceptions, fund expenses. Instead, a portion of the advisory fee you pay is allocated to access the Flex funds in which your account will be invested.

  • What does rebalancing investments mean?

    Rebalancing investments is the process of buying and selling investments to help keep a portfolio in line with an investment strategy.

  • When are investments in my Fidelity® Personalized Planning & Advice account rebalanced?

    If the investments in your Fidelity® Personalized Planning & Advice account drift from your investment strategy, we may rebalance them by buying certain types of assets and selling others.

1-on-1 financial advice and planning

  • What types of financial advice and coaching can I get with a Fidelity® Personalized Planning & Advice account?

    During the 1-on-1 advice and coaching calls with a Fidelity advisor, you'll be able to focus on specific coaching topics like saving for retirement, building a budget, managing debt, and planning for your financial goals. Outside of these calls, you'll also have 24/7 access to our digital planning and advice tools, curated educational content, and online resources to help you get organized.

  • What are coaching calls?

    Coaching calls are 30-minute financial advice and guidance sessions with Fidelity advisors that are available to anyone who has a Fidelity® Personalized Planning & Advice account. On these 1-on-1 phone calls, you'll be able to focus on a variety of different topics like saving for retirement, building a budget, managing debt, and planning for your financial goals, plus have a personalized discussion about your finances.

  • How do I schedule a coaching call?

    Anyone with a Fidelity® Personalized Planning & Advice account can easily schedule a coaching call by using our appointment scheduling tool. After selecting a date and time for the call, we ask for some contact information and a topic for the conversation. Once that information is submitted, we'll send out an email to confirm the call details and give you tips on how to prepare for it.

  • What sort of financial planning do I get with a Fidelity® Personalized Planning & Advice account?

    On your 1-on-1 phone calls with a Fidelity advisor, you'll be able to discuss a financial plan for the future. During your conversations, an advisor will get to know what's important to you, work with you to prioritize your financial goals, and explain the importance of creating a financial plan to help make progress toward reaching them. You'll also get clear next steps so that you have tasks to complete and milestones to reach between each call.
