  • Stock markets in the US regularly suspend operations throughout the year to observe holidays, such as Presidents' Day, Juneteenth, and Labor Day.
  • Occasionally, stock markets will close early at 1:00 p.m. on the day right before or after major holidays.

Even the stock market takes time off. The US’s 2 major markets, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq, halt trading to observe certain holidays throughout the year. Here’s a complete list of stock market holidays and early closures in 2025.

For example, Independence Day falls on a Saturday in 2026, so the NYSE and Nasdaq would likely close for the full day on Friday, July 3, to observe the holiday. In 2027, Independence Day falls on a Sunday, so the markets will likely be closed on Monday, July 5. The “observed” closure typically follows the holiday schedule for federal employees.

Is the stock market open on Juneteenth?

No, the NYSE and Nasdaq will both be closed on Juneteenth, June 19, 2025. Both major stock exchanges closed for the holiday for the first time in 2022, after Juneteenth was designated as a federal holiday in 2021. The NYSE has already announced it will be closed on Juneteenth in 2026, on June 19, and will observe the holiday on June 18 in 2027 because June 19 falls on a Saturday that year.

Occasionally, stock markets have closed unexpectedly for national tragedies, natural disasters, and days of mourning. What happens if I try to buy or sell investments when the market is closed?

Even though you can place brokerage orders when markets are closed, your order wouldn't go through until the stock market reopens. And the share price can change between when you want to place your trade and when it settles. At Fidelity, trades outside market hours for the standard session must be made as shares rather than dollar amounts. When placing the order, you must enter a share quantity estimated to cost less than 95% of the cash you have available to trade with.
