Sustainable Investing at Fidelity

We incorporate ESG research into our active management process, particularly when ESG considerations are material to an investment’s long-term performance.

We understand the importance of transparency to our investors. The stewardship principles outlined in our report reflect the values, processes, and commitments that we undertake as we manage the assets of our customers. With more than $3.5 trillion in assets under management,* Fidelity’s depth and breadth of research coverage mean we can thoroughly assess a company’s economic and investment potential.

We have an ESG Investing Team devoted to these 4 pillars

ESG research and integration

Our ESG framework addresses longer-term systemic risks that investors may not consider when solely evaluating an investment’s quantitative earnings model.

Active stewardship

Engaging with the companies that we research, through meetings with management teams and proxy voting, helps us assess a company’s ESG risks and opportunities.

Knowledge and education

Through proprietary ESG data sets and bottom-up analysis, we provide educational resources and tools for our investment teams to assess a company's sustainability profile.

ESG product development

We are committed to providing our shareholders with the ability to invest consistent with their values, while also seeking to deliver long-term investment value.

Investing through an ESG lens is not new to Fidelity

For many years, we have engaged with companies on behalf of Fidelity mutual funds, our fund shareholders, and institutional clients discussing various long-term economic factors, including the impact of certain ESG factors.

ESG Statement of Policy

Our ESG Statement of Policy shares what ESG investing means to Fidelity and that commitment is supported by our ESG Investing Team. We believe the best-managed companies work to maintain balance among varied interests and groups, and have transparent and clear policies to engage with stakeholders. This includes policies that address ESG issues in the communities in which a company operates. As a result, these considerations are generally incorporated into our evaluation of a company's investment risk or return, across all asset classes, sectors, and markets.

Our commitment to sustainable investing

To aid in our efforts to promote sustainable investing, guide our initiative to effectively incorporate ESG issues into investment decisions, and to support the evolution of ESG disclosure, we have joined several external organizations. These organizations were carefully vetted to ensure they provide:

  • Alignment between Fidelity's perspectives on ESG issues and industry practices
  • Opportunities to enhance Fidelity's knowledge and activities within these spaces
  • Platforms and resources to advance ESG conversations in the industry and drive consistent and comparable disclosures

Stewardship principles and proxy voting

Proxy voting is an important tool for shareholders to ensure companies are embracing sustainable and corporate governance best practices in their day-to-day operations. Fidelity has a set of stewardship principles to guide its proxy voting.

Our goal as investment stewards is to provide clear guidance on what ESG factors we believe are material to each company and to engage and vote accordingly. Therefore, to engage and vote more effectively on the growing number of submitted shareholder proposals, we developed a decision-making framework to ensure that the resolutions we are voting on are financially material, relevant, and provide valuable information to shareholders.

The responsibility to vote on ballot items is an important and integral part of our ESG stewardship and research. Fidelity has a uniform set of proxy voting guidelines, but all our mutual funds have the flexibility to vote individual proxies based on an assessment of each situation.
