Equity Sectors: A Potentially Powerful Investing Tool

Broadening Global Economic Expansion and Investing Opportunities in 2014

Distilling massive amounts of financial information into actionable insights is one of the biggest challenges investment professionals face. Via the Voya Investment Management’s Global Perspectives program, Chief Market Strategist Douglas Coté does just that, making sense of the markets and the fundamentals that drive them within a framework that promotes investment in broad globally diversified portfolios.

The global economic expansion is marching forward today at a modest, almost fitful pace -- but it is indeed marching forward. Only five years removed from the deepest economic downturn since the Great Depression, both global economic output and a number of equity markets have surged to the new all-time highs. As Doug will explain, opportunity persists despite the rebound thanks in part to “tectonic shifts” -- powerful trends that are hard to forecast and longer term in their impact – that are reshaping the economic and investment landscapes. Doug will also discuss how the plethora of data on corporate earnings, inflation, interest rates, housing, oil and gold can be integrated into effective portfolios in support of a variety of investment objectives.

Equity Sectors: A Potentially Powerful Investing Tool

Many investors are not aware that beyond company-specific factors, sector exposure has been the most influential driver of equity market returns for the past 20 years, yet sector-based portfolio construction remains an underutilized strategy in the marketplace. In this session, Colin Beck, Regional Brokerage Consultant at Fidelity Investments, will discuss how sector exposure can potentially enhance returns, lower volatility, and manage risk in a portfolio.

In Doug’s former role as a portfolio manager with the firm, he managed over $14 billion in equity assets. Doug is regularly featured on CNBC’s “Closing Bell”, Bloomberg TV’s “In the Loop with Betty Liu”, Fox Business, and other media outlets. A recognized authority on trading cost, impact and timing risk, he has also been published in the International Journal of Managerial Finance and other publications, coining the term “Honest EPS” as a way of identifying high quality stocks.

Stock markets, especially foreign markets, are volatile and can decline significantly in response to adverse issuer, political, regulatory, market, or economic developments. Sector funds can be more volatile because of their narrow concentration in a specific industry.
