FAQs: How to Trade Precious Metals
How do I get a precious metals quote?
All precious metals trades must be placed by a representative. If you would like a quote for a specific precious metals product that you're interested in buying or selling, please call us at 800-343-3548.
Are there fees to buy or sell precious metals in my Fidelity account?
Commissions for precious metals vary depending upon the quantity you're trading. Buy orders for less than $10,000 have a 2.9% commission fee charged on the gross amount. Sell orders for less than $50,000 have a 2% commission charged on the gross amount. The commissions are reduced on a percentage basis when you buy or sell in larger quantities. You are also assessed a quarterly holding fee based on the market value of your metals at the time of assessment. For more information on fees, please see the full Brokerage Commission and Fee Schedule.
Note: There must be cash in your account to cover the quarterly holding fee.
Is there another way to invest in precious metals?
An alternative to purchasing precious metals directly in your account is to invest in precious metals ETFs. This is a low-fee alternative that can still provide diversification in your account. Try out our Precious Metals ETF Screener.
I currently hold some precious metals; can I deposit these into my Fidelity account?
While there are a few restrictions, Fidelity accepts most precious metals even if you didn't buy them through us. We store precious metals with either FideliTrade or ScotiaMocattaTM; both are precious metals holding companies. There are some precautions you'll want to take before shipping bullion or coins. Please call us at 800-343-3548 so we can explain the best way to send your precious metals.
Note: Fidelity does not accept delivery of rare coins, damaged coins or bars, or collectibles.
I'd like to give my daughter some of my precious metals for her birthday. Can Fidelity send these to me?
Most of the time—as long as the precious metals aren't held in an IRA—we can deliver them to you. The coins or bars are shipped from the storage facility to the address we have on file for you. Your request for delivery must be made in writing and either mailed to us or brought to an Investor Center. Please call us at 800-343-3548 to get complete instructions.
We hold the precious metals at either FideliTrade or ScotiaMocattaTM, and they typically handle the shipments within 72 hours after they receive notification from Fidelity.
- The delivery costs—which include insurance—are based on the package's weight, value, and delivery location.
- The precious metals packages are shipped through a major common shipping carrier.
- There is a $20 package wrapping and handling fee per order—this is in addition to the delivery costs.
- The complete process can take up to 2 weeks. If you don't receive the shipment within 2 weeks, please call us at 800-343-3548 for assistance.
The precious metals market can be significantly affected by international monetary and political developments, such as currency devaluations or revaluations, central bank movements, economic and social conditions within a country, trade imbalances, and trade or currency restrictions between countries.
Fluctuations in the price of precious metals often dramatically affect the profitability of companies in the precious metals sector.
The precious metals market is extremely volatile, and investing directly in physical precious metals may not be appropriate for most investors.
Bullion and coin investments in FBS accounts are not covered by either the SIPC or insurance "in excess of SIPC" coverage of FBS or NFS.
