Winston Churchill is often attributed as having said, "We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give." Many agree with this distinction. Since 1991, Fidelity Charitable® has made more than $23 billion in donor-recommended grants to more than 219,000 nonprofit organizations. Fidelity Charitable is an independent public charity that offered the country's first national donor-advised fund program.
"We're fortunate that many Americans prioritize giving back," said Pamela Norley, president of Fidelity Charitable. "Our mission is to help support and encourage that generosity with programs that make giving accessible, simple, and effective."
Interestingly, where donors live impacts the choice of charities they support according to a special supplement of the 2016 Fidelity Charitable Giving Report. A higher proportion of donors in Washington, D.C., for example, support international affairs nonprofits. San Francisco donors rank first in the proportion supporting the environment, animal welfare and arts-related charitable causes. Donors in Boston make their region number one for support of the health sector.
